After nearly a decade of being held in deplorable conditions at a zoo in Islamabad, Pakistan, the male elephant Kaavanâdubbed “the loneliest elephant in the world”âwas finally rescued today, marking a major victory for the global animal rights movement.
Kaavan spent many years confined alone in a cramped enclosure with no contact with other elephants, following the death of his only companion, a female elephant named Saheli. The lack of medical care, emotional support, and the harsh living environment left Kaavan depressed, obese, and disoriented. He often swayed his head back and forthâa clear sign of stress and psychological trauma in elephants that have been caged for too long.
