Clacton-on-Sea, Essex — In one of the most harrowing cases of animal abuse ever prosecuted in the UK, 21-year-old Mason Lukeman was convicted in 2025 after subjecting a helpless dog — later renamed Hope — to years of unimaginable torture.
Originally named Mulla, the female dog was discovered locked inside a blood-stained bathroom, her body broken and her spirit crushed. It was January 9, 2024, when a lettings agent, horrified by what she found, rushed the dog to a vet. Hope was bleeding from the mouth, her face swollen, her ribs visible, and her tail dislocated.
X-rays revealed a shocking list of injuries:
- Fractured skull and cheekbones
- Broken teeth
- Dislocated tail vertebrae
- Fractured ribs
- One eye so damaged it had to be surgically removed
According to veterinary reports, these were not isolated injuries. They were the result of repeated blunt force trauma — likely inflicted with fists, dumbbells, or worse.
Following her rescue, Hope was transferred to the RSPCA Finsbury Park Animal Hospital, where her long journey to healing began.
But the full horror didn’t end there. During the trial, evidence surfaced that Lukeman, a backyard breeder operating under “GDB Bullies,” had brutalized Hope for four years. Allegations included:
- Beating her with a machete
- Burning her with cigarettes
- Starving her
- Using her as a bait dog after removing her teeth
- Waterboarding and confining her in a shower
- Killing her puppies in front of her when they didn’t sell
He even body-slammed another dog, causing fatal injuries — the second dog was put down to end its suffering.
After pleading guilty to six counts of animal cruelty, Lukeman was sentenced to 12 months in prison, a lifetime ban on owning animals, and a £154 victim surcharge.
“The sheer amount of injuries Hope suffered is horrifying,” said RSPCA Inspector Emma Beynon. “This case will haunt us forever. She endured pain from her head to her tail, over and over again.”
Yet, from this darkness came light. Renamed Hope, the brave survivor was rehomed by a kind rescuer and now lives safely and happily with a loving family in Spain. Her scars remain, but she’s finally living the life she deserves.
“She’s running, playing, and loved beyond words,” said her new family. “She truly is living her best life.”
