🐾 The Heartbreaking End of Tank: Starved to Death While Clutching His Toy 💔

In a case that has shaken the hearts of animal lovers across the UK, a helpless dog named Tank was left to die alone in an abandoned flat — starved, neglected, and forgotten.

Dog killer! RSPCA prosecution of James Warne previously of Colne and now Padiham, Lancashire, who abandoned a dog to starve to death while he went on drugs binge.

James Dennis Warne, 39, of Padiham, Burnley, was convicted after abandoning Tank — a white bully-type dog — without food or water for at least a week while he went on a crack cocaine binge. Tank was later found dead by a third party, curled up on a bed, his ribs protruding, his spine visible… and under his lifeless paw, a small stuffed teddy bear.

When the RSPCA arrived at the Oak Street property in Colne on December 18, 2023, they described the scene as haunting. The power was cut off. Empty crates were scattered around. And in the bedroom, Tank’s fragile, emaciated body lay still beneath a duvet, as though he had tried to stay warm — or just find some comfort in his final moments.

A post-mortem revealed Tank weighed only 12.6kg (27.7 pounds) — well below a healthy weight for his breed. He had no body fat, no muscle mass, and was in Body Condition Score 1/9 — the lowest possible rating. A veterinary report confirmed that Tank had suffered for weeks, feeling relentless hunger, weakness, and the mental anguish of waiting for a meal that never came.

The court heard Warne admitted to leaving the dog unattended for a week, admitting that he “should have been there for him.” He was convicted of two animal welfare offenses, receiving a suspended eight-week sentence, a five-year animal ownership ban, and court fees.

Chief Inspector Susie Micallef of the RSPCA commented:

“The image of Tank curled up on the bed with his teddy is one I will never forget. This poor dog died cold, hungry, and alone — while the man responsible simply vanished.”

This tragic case is a stark reminder of the importance of vigilance in reporting suspected neglect. No animal deserves to suffer this way.
