Dallas Cowboys cornerback Stephon Gilmore is turning compassion into action with the launch of “Healing Companions,” a heartfelt new initiative connecting military veterans battling PTSD and depression with rescued shelter dogs in need of a second chance.
The program, based in Texas, aims to support veterans struggling with emotional wounds by pairing them with abandoned dogs who, like them, have endured trauma and loneliness. Gilmore, known for his quiet leadership on the field, said the inspiration came from a close friend — a former soldier — who found healing through a rescue dog.

💬 “They were both broken in different ways, but when they met, something changed. I knew I had to help make that happen for more people,” Gilmore shared during the program’s unveiling.
Gilmore is fully funding the first year of the program, including veterinary care, emotional support dog training, and post-adoption counseling. He has also partnered with local VA centers, mental health professionals, and no-kill animal shelters to create a safe and long-term support network.
The pilot program will launch with over 100 veterans and 120 shelter dogs across Dallas, Fort Worth, and Austin.

💬 “I’ve fought battles on the field. These men and women fought for our country. Now it’s my turn to show up for them,” Gilmore added.
