What Was Meant as a July 4th Celebration Quickly Turned Into One of the Most Controversial Moments of the NFL Offseason
In a stunning on-air rant that has since exploded across social media, longtime Kansas City radio host Kevin Kietzman launched into a deeply personal attack on the Chiefs’ franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes, labeling him “fat” and “an embarrassment” after a shirtless photo of Mahomes from a Fourth of July party surfaced online.
The image, which shows Mahomes poolside in what most would consider a relaxed offseason setting, has been met with everything from harmless jokes to brutal criticism. But no one went harder than Kietzman.
“He’s fat, he’s an embarrassment,” Kietzman said during his broadcast. “Stop the fast food, do a sit-up, do something… I don’t understand it. You can’t just run through your NFL career eating Taco Bell all the time and DoorDashing fried chicken.”
If that wasn’t harsh enough, Kietzman continued by invoking Mahomes’ $500 million contract, questioning his dedication, fitness, and responsibility as the face of a franchise — and of the NFL.
BACKLASH & FURY
Fans were quick to fire back.
“Disrespectful doesn’t even begin to describe it,” one Chiefs fan tweeted. “Mahomes is a Super Bowl MVP, a two-time champion, and you’re mad he had a beer belly at a pool party in July?”
Another pointed out the obvious: “He’s not fat. He’s a 6’2” professional athlete who hasn’t missed a game due to injury in years. What are we even talking about?”
But others didn’t stop at tweets. A Change.org petition calling for Kietzman’s suspension has already gathered over 15,000 signatures, and several Chiefs players have reportedly unfollowed or blocked the radio host on social media.

THE HISTORY: Kietzman vs. Mahomes
This isn’t the first time Kevin Kietzman has criticized Mahomes. In 2019, he was suspended from WHB after making controversial comments about Mahomes’ family. Though he later apologized, many believed the damage was permanent.
His most recent comments have resurfaced those tensions and led fans to question: Does Kietzman have a personal vendetta?
“It feels targeted,” said local sports journalist Dana Welling. “There’s a difference between honest critique and obsession. This crossed a line.”
THE TEAM REACTS (OR DOESN’T)
As of now, neither Patrick Mahomes nor the Kansas City Chiefs have made a formal statement. Mahomes did, however, post a cryptic tweet the morning after the controversy erupted:
“Greatness doesn’t take breaks… but sometimes it takes a breath. 🏝️”
Some fans interpreted this as a subtle response to the photo and backlash — a way of saying, “Relax, I’ve got this under control.”
Meanwhile, head coach Andy Reid, known for his fierce loyalty to his players, has not addressed the issue publicly but was seen chuckling with Mahomes at practice just days later.
THE DOUBLE STANDARD DEBATE
Many fans and pundits have since raised a more serious issue — the double standard in how athletes’ bodies are discussed, especially Black athletes.
“Tom Brady could show up with a dad bod and people would say he’s aging gracefully,” one columnist wrote. “Mahomes has one off-day with fast food and people act like he’s a disgrace. Why?”
Others are comparing Mahomes’ situation to that of Nikola Jokic, the two-time NBA MVP who is regularly joked about for his physique but never questioned for his work ethic or skill.
WHAT’S REALLY AT STAKE?
While Mahomes’ legacy is already secure — Super Bowl wins, MVP awards, and records that continue to pile up — this situation has sparked a broader conversation about the pressures athletes face in the offseason, and the way social media and media figures feel entitled to police their appearances.
“You’re talking about a guy who’s thrown for 5,000 yards, played through injuries, and carried a franchise,” one analyst said. “If he wants to enjoy a few burgers in July, he’s earned that.”
Kietzman: Unapologetic or Doubling Down?
Interestingly, Kietzman seems unmoved by the backlash. In a follow-up podcast episode, he doubled down:
“People are mad because I told the truth. He looked out of shape. That’s not what you want to see from your leader before a season.”
He even suggested that Mahomes’ body “reflects where his priorities are,” a comment many felt crossed into character assassination.
WHERE DOES IT GO FROM HERE?
Mahomes will, undoubtedly, be under the microscope when training camp opens. Cameras will zoom in on his physique. Every pass, sprint, and rep will be analyzed. If he dominates, which he likely will, this controversy may quickly disappear into the noise of another electric season.
But if he stumbles early?
You can bet Kietzman — and those like him — will be waiting.
THE FINAL QUESTION…
