“They Didn’t Want Me Anymore” — Dee Dee Survived the Worst Humans Could Do and Still Wants to Love Again

From Abandonment to a Second Chance — Dee Dee’s Painful Road to Healing

Dee Dee, a two-year-old Black and Tan German Shepherd, should have been playing in a loving yard or lying at her owner’s feet. Instead, her early life was one of exploitation and neglect. Used to breed puppies and then left tethered outside, Dee Dee never knew the warmth of a secure home. Her future changed when Beaufort County Animal Care Services (BCACS) stepped in after her owner attempted to surrender two of her puppies.

BCACS agreed to take the puppies under the condition that Dee Dee and the father dog would be spayed and neutered. The man consented, and the puppies quickly found good homes. But Dee Dee wasn’t so lucky.

After being spayed, she was released from her tether and allowed to roam free. Predictably, she ran into the street—chasing something, perhaps looking for care she had never truly known—and was struck by a car just three weeks later. Her owner, now unwilling or unable to pay for the necessary surgery, gave her up.

BCACS, overwhelmed and under-resourced, faced two grim options: euthanize Dee Dee or beg for help. That plea found its way to Noah’s Arks Rescue, who—despite already being stretched thin—refused to let her die. Dee Dee was sent to a specialist in Charleston, South Carolina, where a metal plate was implanted in her leg in a desperate effort to save it.

But her nightmare wasn’t over. Shortly after surgery, Dee Dee developed a dangerous infection: Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a severe, often antibiotic-resistant bacteria that can attack surgical sites, destroy implants, and lead to amputation or death if not treated quickly. Quarantined and on strong antibiotics, she endured weeks of uncertainty and pain.

Her caretakers fought tirelessly. They didn’t just treat her infection—they cared for her emotionally, too. German Shepherds are known for their loyalty and sensitivity, and Dee Dee, despite all she had suffered, never turned cold. She remained gentle, hopeful—even through quarantine and isolation.

And finally, there’s good news.

After nearly a month of treatment, Dee Dee’s latest X-rays show no signs of infection. Her leg is healing, and she is now out of quarantine. She still has a way to go before being completely healed, but her life is no longer in danger. This sweet girl, once discarded by the people who should have protected her, is now on the path to a full recovery.
