Kruger, South Africa – A terrifying moment unfolded at Kruger National Park when a young elephant narrowly escaped death after being ambushed by a crocodile that clamped down on its trunk while it was drinking water. Fortunately, thanks to the quick intervention of park rangers and the veterinary team, the elephant was rescued just in time.
The Sudden Attack by the Riverbank
According to park staff, the incident occurred yesterday afternoon at a small river inside the reserve. A herd of about 12 elephants was drinking water when a massive crocodile suddenly lunged from beneath the surface, latching onto the trunk of a six-year-old calf.
Terrified trumpeting echoed through the air as the young elephant tried to pull back. Its mother and other adult elephants in the herd immediately rushed to surround the crocodile, using their trunks and legs to attack aggressively. After several tense minutes, the crocodile finally released its grip and retreated into the water.
Severe Injury and Emergency Treatment
Rangers quickly arrived to find the calf’s trunk badly torn, bleeding heavily, and at high risk of infection. The veterinary team promptly sedated the elephant, stopped the bleeding, and stitched the wound. Some severely damaged tissue was carefully treated to ensure the trunk’s breathing and feeding functions could be preserved.
Lead veterinarian on the scene, Dr. Hendrik Botha, stated:
“We were fortunate to intervene just in time. The trunk is essential to an elephant’s survival—for drinking, feeding, and communication. Without immediate treatment, the calf could have lost its ability to survive in the wild.”
Recovery and Close Monitoring
The elephant is now under observation in a designated care area within the park. It has begun eating and drinking again using its trunk, though movement is still limited. Veterinarians estimate it will take several weeks for the wound to fully heal and will continue monitoring for any signs of infection.
