Tommy’s journey began long before he took his first breath. For Kate and her husband, 2022 had brought the excitement of a second pregnancy. After hoping to expand their family, Kate received the life-changing positive pregnancy test on her birthday. Everything seemed perfect—until their 20-week scan, when life took an unexpected turn.
Initially, the scan appeared routine. Kate and her husband were thrilled to learn they were expecting another boy. But the sonographer struggled to get the images needed, advising Kate to walk and eat, and eventually referring them to a fetal medicine specialist. The initial concern seemed to be minor—the baby’s head circumference was measuring small—but the specialist had more to reveal.

Kate vividly recalls the moment the words came: “There is a problem with the baby’s heart.” Shock and disbelief swept over her. They had come in for a minor concern, and instead, their son was diagnosed with Transposition of the Great Arteries (TGA), a serious congenital heart defect. At just 20 weeks, their world had changed.
The next day, at a larger hospital, a fetal cardiologist confirmed the diagnosis. Kate was overwhelmed, scared, and unsure what the future would hold. Yet, she felt gratitude that Tommy’s condition had been identified antenatally—this early detection would prove life-saving. Over the following weeks, Kate and her husband educated themselves, turning to resources like Tiny Tickers and spending hours reading stories from other families facing similar challenges. Hospital appointments, midwife support, and counseling helped them prepare mentally and emotionally for what lay ahead.

The anticipated birth plan was daunting yet meticulously prepared. Tommy was due via caesarean section on July 18th. Kate remembers feeling a rare calmness as the day arrived, knowing she was ready. The consultant offered a moment that Kate had feared impossible: skin-to-skin contact immediately after birth. For a baby needing urgent care, this was extraordinary. Yet Tommy was placed on her chest, a moment of bonding and reassurance captured in photographs that would sustain Kate through the challenging days ahead.
Tommy’s path, however, was far from typical. After his brief skin-to-skin experience, he was rushed to the NICU. Six hours passed before his parents could see him again. His oxygen levels remained unstable, and he required a balloon septostomy to improve blood flow. When interventions in the NICU failed, he was transferred to the PICU. Early one morning, Kate received a call: Tommy’s condition had worsened. Severe pulmonary hypertension threatened his fragile heart, and ECMO—an advanced life-support machine—was the only option to give his heart and lungs a chance to rest.
Thanks to the expertise and dedication of the cardiac team, Tommy stabilized. At nine days old, he underwent a successful arterial switch operation. Recovery was slow and delicate; two and a half weeks on a ventilator tested the family’s patience and resilience. A mild chylothorax complicated matters, but Tommy proved himself a fighter. Gradually, he grew stronger, and after five weeks, Kate could finally hold him, feed him, and begin the process of bonding that had been interrupted by the urgency of his care.

Tommy’s journey was a testament to the importance of early detection, expert care, and parental support. Had his heart defect not been found during the 20-week scan, outcomes could have been drastically different. The chance for skin-to-skin contact, the guidance from the consultant, and the relentless care of the NICU and PICU teams provided the family with a foundation of hope during the most frightening of times.
Now, ten months later, Tommy is thriving. His heart check-ups are positive, he has reached his developmental milestones, and he is treated like any other child. Neurology appointments, a precaution after his ECMO treatment, have shown no lasting concerns. Tommy’s story serves as a powerful reminder that every heart baby has a unique path—sometimes unexpected, always challenging—but their resilience is extraordinary.

Kate’s hope in sharing Tommy’s journey is clear: to highlight the strength of these little heart warriors, to reassure families facing similar diagnoses, and to honor the extraordinary medical teams that make survival possible. Tommy’s heart may have started life fragile, but today, it beats strong—proof that courage, love, and early detection can create miracles.
