AJ’s story begins with a diagnosis that no parent ever expects to hear. At just 18 weeks gestation, doctors told his family there was no hope. They were told their son would likely never make it to birth, let alone survive any kind of surgery. But AJ had other plans. Against all odds, he defied the bleak predictions and made his grand entrance into the world on January 9, 2019.
When AJ was born, his heart was already fighting its own battle. He stopped breathing on the operating table, and within moments, was intubated and rushed to Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC. His journey was already marked by moments of fear and uncertainty, but his family never lost faith. At just 36 hours old, AJ had his first emergency surgery. Due to the rarity of his anatomy, the doctors could only band his pulmonary arteries, and they informed his family that he would need to stay sedated and intubated for another three weeks. They were given a heartbreaking choice: attempt a high-risk surgery known as the Norwood or move to comfort care.
With less than a 20% survival rate, the decision was agonizing, but AJ’s parents took the leap. Eighteen hours in the operating room later, filled with complications, AJ emerged and was placed back in the Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit (CICU). For the next three weeks, they were unable to hold their son, his fragile body reliant on machines for every breath. AJ remained intubated for a total of 10 weeks from birth, his life hanging in the balance. Despite the odds, he continued to fight.

At just five months old, AJ had to undergo a third open-heart surgery because his septum was closing. Another long and difficult surgery—14 hours this time—left his parents anxiously waiting for any sign of improvement. When he emerged from the operating room, it seemed he was doing okay, but just a week later, AJ suffered his first stroke. It would not be his last. Over the next months, AJ battled through several more strokes, and his body struggled with fluid retention and effusions after his Glenn procedure. Despite everything, he showed up every day, a little fighter refusing to give in.
After months of fighting, AJ was finally able to come home in October 2019, but the joy of bringing him home was tempered with the reality of his condition. AJ was sent home on palliative care, as his heart and kidneys were failing. His family, though overwhelmed with grief, cherished every moment they had with him. They spent the next two years in and out of the hospital, but despite all the battles, AJ was still here. He continued to defy expectations, showing time and time again that he was not done fighting.
In July 2022, a glimmer of hope appeared when the doctors at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) thought they had found a surgery that could help. The family traveled to Philadelphia with high hopes, but after two failed attempts and a life-threatening situation in the operating room due to severe bleeding, it was decided that no more surgeries would be possible. They were left with heavy hearts but also a deep sense of gratitude for the time they had.

Despite the dire predictions and failed surgeries, AJ is still here—still fighting, still showing his family that the journey is far from over. His story is one of unimaginable challenges, yet one that continues to unfold with moments of strength, love, and courage that no one could have predicted. Although AJ is now under hospice care, he continues to defy expectations, proving that the human spirit can endure even the most overwhelming of battles.
Nearly three years after doctors said he had no chance, AJ is still here, still fighting, still showing his family that there is always more to the story than what meets the eye. Every admission to the hospital is another reminder of the resilience of this little boy, a heart warrior who refuses to give up. His family, while fully aware of the challenges ahead, could not be more grateful for each precious moment they have with him.
AJ’s journey has been nothing short of miraculous. Through every surgery, every stroke, every difficult day, AJ’s spirit has remained unbroken. His story has taught those who know him that strength is not measured by the number of surgeries or hospital stays, but by the fight inside a person, no matter how small they are. He has taught his family the true meaning of gratitude, resilience, and the value of every single moment spent with a loved one.

While AJ’s future remains uncertain, one thing is clear: he is a fighter, and his journey has already shown the world that miracles can happen when you refuse to give up. The love his family has for him is immeasurable, and they remain hopeful, grateful, and proud of the warrior their son continues to be.
As AJ continues to battle, his family asks for continued prayers and support, knowing that the road ahead will be difficult but also filled with moments of grace and hope. AJ’s story is a beacon of light, a reminder that no matter the obstacles, we all have the strength within us to keep fighting for the ones we love.
