OVER THE RAINBOW: BABY ROSE’S 165-DAY JOURNEY FROM THE CVICU TO HOME .

After 165 long days in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU), little Rose Opal Ann Byers finally went home — dressed as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, a fitting symbol of courage, hope, and the journey she bravely endured.

Rose was diagnosed shortly after birth with truncus arteriosus, a rare and life-threatening congenital heart defect. Just days into her life, she underwent critical open-heart surgery, beginning a months-long battle that would test not only her tiny body, but the strength of her entire family.

Throughout her extended hospital stay, Rose’s parents, Spencer and Madison, never left her side. Day after day, night after night, they watched over their daughter, drawing strength from the dedicated nurses and medical staff who became more than caregivers — they became family. In the CVICU, trust, compassion, and hope were shared as freely as medical expertise.

Despite ongoing challenges, including ventilator support, a feeding tube, and the need for continuous specialized care, Rose’s spirit never dimmed. Nurses and doctors often remarked on her bright eyes and cheerful presence — a reminder that even the smallest patients can show extraordinary resilience.

Each milestone, no matter how small, felt like a victory. And finally, after nearly six months, Rose reached the moment her family had been praying for: discharge day. As she left the hospital dressed as Dorothy, it felt as though she had followed her own yellow brick road — one paved with courage, love, and perseverance.

While Rose’s medical journey is far from over, her progress stands as a powerful testament to the strength of family, the dedication of medical professionals, and the unstoppable will of a little girl who defied the odds.

As Rose begins this new chapter at home, her family carries with them deep gratitude — and hope for the future. Please join us in celebrating Rose’s incredible journey and sending love and support as she continues forward, one brave step at a time.
