FROM FRAGILE BEGINNINGS TO A BRIGHT FUTURE: MIA’S PREMATURE JOURNEY OF HOPE .

In July 2021, Sabrina and Rob welcomed their daughter Mia into the world nine weeks earlier than expected. Weighing just 770 grams — less than two pounds — Mia was tiny, fragile, and immediately faced life-threatening challenges. From the very beginning, she struggled to breathe and required intensive care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

For Sabrina and Rob, the sight of their newborn surrounded by machines was devastating. “Seeing her so fragile was heartbreaking,” Sabrina recalls. Mia endured multiple surgeries due to serious bowel complications, each one a reminder of how uncertain her future remained. Yet through it all, the dedication and compassion of the NICU medical team gave Mia the chance to fight.

During those long months in hospital, Cots for Tots became a vital source of support for the family. The charity provided Sabrina and Rob with a place to stay close to Mia, allowing them to be by her side every day without the added stress of travel or accommodation costs. That closeness made an overwhelming situation just a little more bearable.

After 174 days of intensive care, countless procedures, and small but hard-earned milestones, Mia was finally strong enough to go home. It was a moment Sabrina and Rob had dreamed of for nearly six months.

Today, Mia is a happy, healthy two-year-old — full of energy, laughter, and curiosity. Her remarkable progress is a testament to expert medical care, unwavering parental love, and the support of charities that make a difference when families need it most.

Grateful for the second chance their daughter received, Sabrina and Rob have now launched a Christmas appeal to raise funds for additional ventilators, ensuring other premature babies have the same opportunity to survive and thrive. “Every baby deserves the chance to survive and thrive,” Sabrina says.

This Christmas, you can help give fragile newborns like Mia a fighting chance. Please consider donating and supporting the lifesaving work that makes stories like Mia’s possible.
