NEW: WNBA player Alyssa Thomas has been suspended after she cheap-shotted Caitlin Clark in the throat.

No foul was called during the game as Thomas was caught on camera jamming her fist into Clark’s throat.

The league has now suspended Thomas for one game and will fine her $1000.

“Per WNBA rule, the League Office has the option, following its review of any game, to reclassify a Flagrant foul or to classify as Flagrant any foul not called as such during a game and may impose a fine and/or suspension,” the WNBA said.

“Even if you say it wasn’t intentional… Caitlin Clark’s throat is still hurting! Physics don’t lie — nobody falls like that. She did the same thing to Angel Reese last year around the neck too.”

I can’t imagine an organization with more incompetent leadership at the top than the WNBA….Caitlin Clark is going to be out on Saturday, Steph White says., “No indication” on how long she’ll be out.”

Stephanie White on Caitlin Clark (back):

“She’s doing alright… no indication (on how long she’s out). It’s a good time because we have all week next week, so we’ll take this opportunity to get her treatment.”

Indiana’s next game after Saturday is 7/5.

Good news: the Fever have a full week off after this to get her healthy.

But by the time fans left the arena and social media exploded into the early hours of the morning, nobody was talking about the score anymore.

They were talking about the whistles.

Or, perhaps more accurately, the whistles that never came.

What should have been remembered as one of the most entertaining games of the WNBA season instead descended into controversy, outrage, and allegations of officiating failures that have sent shockwaves throughout the league.

If the WNBA were ever to suspend the entire four-person officiating crew pending an investigation, it would represent one of the most extraordinary moments in league history.

And judging by the emotional reaction from fans, many believe the situation would warrant exactly that.

The Fever-Mercury showdown had everything.

Superstar talent.

High-level shot-making.

Momentum swings.

Playoff-like intensity.

A one-possession finish.

It was the kind of game the WNBA has been craving during its unprecedented surge in popularity.

Then came the controversy.

Throughout the night, social media erupted over a series of disputed calls and several moments in which fans believed physical play crossed the line. Clips spread rapidly online, with commentators, former players, and supporters debating whether certain actions should have resulted in fouls or even more serious penalties.

The loudest reactions centered on contact involving Fever superstar Caitlin Clark.

By the final buzzer, many Indiana fans weren’t celebrating a hard-fought effort.

They were furious.

They believed their team had been denied fair officiating.

They believed physical play had gone unpunished.

And they believed the league owed players and fans answers.

The frustration quickly grew beyond Indianapolis.

National sports personalities weighed in.

Television commentators debated the standard of officiating.

Former athletes questioned consistency in player protection.

The discussion became bigger than one game.

Because whether one supports Indiana, Phoenix, or neither team at all, there is one thing nearly every sports fan understands:

Nothing destroys confidence in a league faster than the perception of unfairness.

Professional sports depend on trust.

Players must trust that rules will be enforced consistently.

Coaches must trust that officiating standards are clear.

Fans must trust that outcomes are determined by the athletes on the floor.

The moment that trust begins to erode, controversy takes on a life of its own.

That is precisely why this hypothetical scenario would represent such a significant moment for the WNBA.

The league is experiencing arguably the most important period in its history.

Television ratings have surged.

Attendance has reached new heights.

Merchandise sales are booming.

Games have become major national events.

And at the center of much of that attention is Caitlin Clark.

Whether people cheer for her or root against her, there is no denying her impact on women’s basketball.

Every Fever game feels enormous.

Every possession is dissected online.

Every hard foul becomes a national talking point.

Every injury sparks concern.

That reality creates enormous pressure on everyone involved, including officials.

The challenge facing modern referees is unlike anything previous generations experienced.

Every call is replayed.

Every angle is analyzed.

Every missed whistle becomes a viral clip.

The microscope never turns off.

Still, that scrutiny also comes with responsibility.

Leagues cannot afford inconsistency, especially when player safety enters the conversation.

Fans can accept mistakes.

They cannot easily accept confusion.

They cannot easily accept uncertainty.

And they certainly cannot accept the perception that star players are not being adequately protected.

That concern has only intensified following news that Caitlin Clark has been sidelined with back issues and that there remains no firm timetable for her return.

Indiana head coach Stephanie White has emphasized that the organization intends to use the upcoming break to help Clark recover fully.

From a basketball perspective, that is unquestionably the correct approach.

From an emotional perspective, however, it has only amplified frustration among Fever supporters.

Their star player is injured.

A controversial loss remains fresh.

Questions about officiating continue to dominate discussions.

The combination has created a perfect storm.

Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of the entire episode is how much it reveals about the current state of the WNBA.

A few years ago, a disputed regular-season call might have remained a local story.

Today, it becomes national news.

Millions are watching.

Millions care.

Millions have opinions.

That is ultimately a sign of growth.

But growth also brings accountability.

The WNBA’s future depends not only on extraordinary athletes and thrilling games but also on maintaining faith in the integrity of competition.

The Fever-Mercury thriller should have been remembered as an instant classic.

Instead, it became something else entirely:

A reminder that in modern sports, one controversial night can ignite an entire league, dominate the national conversation, and force everyone—from players and coaches to officials and executives—to confront difficult questions about fairness, consistency, and trust.

And until those questions are answered, the final score may remain the least important thing anyone remembers about this game.
