Bills head coach makes feelings clear on DJ Moore.
The Buffalo Bills made one of the boldest moves of the offseason when they acquired wide receiver DJ Moore from the Chicago Bears in exchange for a 2026 second-round draft pick. Buffalo entered the offseason determined to strengthen its receiving corps, and the front office viewed Moore as the proven playmaker capable of giving quarterback Josh Allen another dependable target. While Moore may not currently be considered among the league’s elite receivers, the Bills believe he represents a significant upgrade over the options they had entering the year.
The trade immediately generated discussion about whether Moore alone can solve Buffalo’s biggest offensive question. Since moving on from Stefon Diggs, the Bills have searched for a true No. 1 receiver capable of consistently producing against top defenses. As training camp approaches, much of the attention surrounding Buffalo’s offense centers on whether Moore can successfully fill that role.
Will DJ Moore be Enough For the Bills?
NFL.com analyst Jeremy Bergman recently identified Buffalo’s passing attack as one of the team’s biggest storylines heading into the new season. According to Bergman, the Bills must determine whether Moore is enough to elevate the receiving unit or whether several other wide receivers will also need to take meaningful steps forward. The answer could ultimately shape Buffalo’s chances of competing for a Super Bowl.
Bergman noted that replacing Stefon Diggs has proven far more difficult than expected. Young receivers Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman, along with free-agent additions Josh Palmer and Brandin Cooks, have yet to fully replace the production Diggs once provided in Buffalo’s offense. That lingering void is one of the primary reasons the Bills aggressively pursued Moore this offseason.
The arrival of Moore also reunites him with offensive coordinator Joe Brady, who previously coached him during their time together with the Carolina Panthers. That familiarity could help accelerate Moore’s transition into Buffalo’s offensive system while strengthening his chemistry with Josh Allen. The organization believes the previous relationship gives both player and coach a valuable foundation entering the season.
Unlike his final season in Chicago, Moore now has the opportunity to become the unquestioned top receiving option in an offense built around one of the NFL’s premier quarterbacks. Josh Allen has consistently demonstrated his willingness to challenge defenses vertically while spreading the football across the field. Buffalo hopes Moore can quickly establish himself as Allen’s most trusted target.
Building chemistry between quarterback and receiver remains one of the most important priorities throughout training camp. Bergman suggested that July and August will be critical months as Allen and Moore continue developing their connection before the regular season begins. Their progress during camp could determine just how explosive Buffalo’s passing game becomes.
Moore himself acknowledged earlier this offseason that there were some growing pains during spring practices. Learning a new offensive system while adjusting to new teammates naturally requires time, but the veteran receiver expressed confidence that the extended offseason work would allow everything to come together by the fall. The Bills are counting on that improvement becoming evident when the games begin.
Beyond producing catches himself, Moore is expected to help elevate the entire receiving room. One player who could particularly benefit from his presence is second-year wide receiver Keon Coleman, who has faced increased scrutiny following an inconsistent rookie campaign. Buffalo hopes Moore’s experience and leadership can accelerate Coleman’s development.
Coleman has remained under the spotlight since Bills owner Terry Pegula publicly challenged his progress earlier this year. Expectations remain high for the young receiver despite the criticism, and the coaching staff believes continued growth is still possible. Having an accomplished veteran like Moore alongside him could provide an important example both on and off the field.
If Moore can simultaneously perform as Buffalo’s No. 1 receiver while helping Coleman take the next step, the Bills’ offense could become considerably more dangerous. Bergman believes that outcome would significantly improve Joe Brady’s first full season directing Buffalo’s offense. Success in both areas would justify the organization’s aggressive investment in acquiring Moore.
Moore Had a Down Season in 2025
Although Moore enters Buffalo with an impressive overall résumé, his most recent season was not his strongest statistically. After spending five seasons with the Carolina Panthers and three with the Chicago Bears, the veteran finished the 2025 campaign with 50 receptions for 682 receiving yards and six touchdowns across 17 games. Those numbers represented a noticeable decline compared to several earlier seasons in his career.
Much of that statistical drop has been attributed to Chicago’s offensive philosophy rather than Moore’s individual ability. The Bears relied heavily on one of the league’s most productive rushing attacks, reducing the overall number of passing opportunities available throughout the season. As a result, Moore simply had fewer chances to produce the kind of numbers fans had become accustomed to seeing.
Buffalo’s offense presents a much different situation. While the Bills also feature an effective running game, they remain built around Josh Allen’s arm and his ability to make explosive plays through the air. That offensive approach is one of the primary reasons Buffalo believed Moore could immediately return to higher production.
Joe Brady Coached Moore in Carolina
One of the strongest reasons for optimism is Joe Brady’s familiarity with Moore’s game. Brady served as the Panthers’ offensive coordinator from 2020 through 2021, giving him firsthand experience working with the receiver during some of the most productive years of his career. That previous relationship helped convince Buffalo that Moore could still perform at a very high level.
Speaking earlier this offseason, Brady explained that he evaluated Moore based on current game film rather than relying on old memories. He emphasized that the receiver’s movement, athleticism, versatility, and playmaking ability all remained intact despite the statistical decline in Chicago. Brady also revealed that the coaching staff already has a clear vision for maximizing Moore’s strengths within Buffalo’s offense.
The offensive coordinator added that Allen and Moore have spent considerable time working together throughout the offseason to build chemistry before training camp. That additional preparation has only increased Brady’s confidence that the partnership can become one of the strengths of Buffalo’s offense this year. If Moore performs at the level the Bills expect, he could become the missing piece in a passing attack that has searched for a new identity since Stefon Diggs departed, giving Buffalo another legitimate opportunity to challenge for the AFC title and potentially reach the Super Bowl.
