In a heartwarming development, Ndara, a once-orphaned elephant, celebrated the birth of her first calf in early March.
The newborn, a charming baby boy, was affectionately named “Neptune” by the caretakers at the Voi Reintegration Unit.
The joyous occasion unfolded on March 4, 2017, when keepers noticed a gathering of elephants near the unit.
Among them were wild-born babies and their mothers, including Ndara, who had successfully given birth.
The news brought immense excitement, with fellow elephants, especially Emma, expressing enchantment towards the adorable newcomer.
Neptune’s arrival marked a significant milestone for Ndara, who joined the organization as an orphan in September 2001.
Discovered near Maungu town in Tsavo East at just eight months old, Ndara had fallen into an open-water pipeline maintenance hole.
Despite visible wounds, she was rescued, showcasing remarkable strength and resilience.
Ndara’s journey, marked by adversity from poaching, included enduring poisoned arrows. Multiple surgeries and months of care followed, allowing her to integrate into Emily’s herd in Voi.
Despite challenges, Ndara survived and thrived, ultimately becoming a proud mother to Neptune.
Mweya has taken on the role of the unofficial caretaker for Neptune, bringing the count of wild-born babies within the Ex Orphans to an impressive 25.
Each of these young elephants symbolizes the success of the Orphans Project.
