Dololo’s Brave гeѕсᴜe: A Night of Courage and Compassion Illuminates Hope for an Elephant in Need

On the serene morning of September 2018, Mr. Salim Makomba, Company Commander of KWS at Taita Ranches, received an urgent message from the local community.

They reported a distressed baby elephant stranded in Mzee Kirema’s dam near Tsavo East National Park.

The community had watered their livestock the previous evening, noticing a herd of elephants nearby. Astonishingly, there was no sign of trouble at the dam then.

The following day, they revealed a heartbreaking sight: a young elephant desperately struggling in the water, unable to find footing amidst treacherous conditions.

The calf fought for survival throughout the night, keeping his trunk above water for breath. Hazardous circumstances prevented the herd from aiding, compelling them to abandon the calf as they escaped.

Recognizing the urgency, KWS Rangers removed their uniforms, entered the water, and guided the exhausted calf safely. The calf was transported to a KWS camp a few kilometers away.

Realizing the seriousness of the situation, KWS Vet Dr. Poghon and DSWT Keepers assessed the calf’s condition, determining that intensive care at the DSWT Nursery was essential.

After stabilization efforts, the DSWT helicopter swiftly transported the calf to Nairobi, ensuring a direct and efficient delivery.

In Nairobi, the calf, affectionately named Dololo, was carefully unloaded, showing remarkable tranquility.

He stood for the first time since the ordeal, responding positively to nurturing and nourishment.

Throughout the night, a Keeper provided care, and Dololo, despite initial weakness, eventually joined new calf companions Luggard and Merru in the park.

Dololo’s recovery journey included deworming and attention to a significant worm infestation. Despite initial frailty, Dololo gradually regained strength, venturing into the park after a week, accompanied by Luggard and Merru.

Reflecting on his challenging past, Dololo’s rescue stands as a testament to the dedication of wildlife guardians.

Witnessing his revived health brings immense satisfaction, highlighting the positive impact of timely intervention and compassion.
