Heartwarming гeɩeаѕe: Orphan Elephant Finds Freedom in Ithumba, Tsavo East National Park, Thanks to David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust’s Rehabilitation Efforts

In a moving tale of rehabilitation and resilience, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust recently released an ex-elephant orphan into the wilderness at Ithumba in the northern region of Tsavo East National Park.

Unfortunately, this majestic creature had recently suffered a harrowing encounter with a lion, leaving it with fresh bite marks covering its entire body.

Approaching the elephant cautiously, the dedicated team discreetly administered 10 milligrams of Etorphine using a 1.5 cc dart barrel. Within five minutes, the gentle giant gracefully descended to the ground.

The team worked meticulously, adjusting the position of its trunk and ear to ensure proper respiration while also regulating its body temperature by pouring water onto its ear.\

A thorough examination revealed numerous distressing bite wounds and lacerations across the elephant’s majestic body.

Of particular concern were severe injuries to its left thigh and face, resulting in the tragic loss of one eye.

The team immediately began treatment, cleansing the wounds with Hydrogen Peroxide and purified water.

Subsequently, the wounds were disinfected with a tin of iodine and sprayed with oxytetracycline for healing.

A layer of moistened green clay was applied to expedite recovery, and long-lasting antibiotics were administered via intramuscular injection.

Dexamethasone Hcl was also administered intravenously through a prominent vein in the ear.

Reversing the anesthesia, the resilient elephant effortlessly regained its standing position. However, due to the traumatic experience, keeping the elephant under observation at the fences is crucial.

Despite the challenges, the outlook for complete recovery is positive, though there may be partial vision loss in one eye.

This remarkable journey highlights the dedication of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust to rehabilitating and releasing elephants back into their natural habitat, showcasing the indomitable spirit of these magnificent creatures.
