Russian amateur photographer Alexey Tishchenko captured the rare scene of a fight between two hippos to determine which would be the leader of the herd in a wildlife reserve in Namibia.

Two hippos suddenly challenged each other by opening their wide mouths full of sharp teeth to threaten their opponents. Immediately after that, they rushed to attack each other.

“After the fight ended, the winner showed off his victory by gaping at the rest of the herd,” said photographer Tishchenko.

The dry season causes the hippo’s aquatic habitat to shrink. This leads to fights between males and females to divide their territory.
