Mother Nature continually astonishes us with her magical artistic flair. An embodiment of this is an extraordinary spectacle in the ocean off the coast of Iceland, on Heimaey island, where an immense rock formation astonishingly mirrors the shape of a colossal elephant quenching its thirst from the Atlantic waters.
The grandeur of this captivating illusion is the result of two main factors. The first is the cliff face’s distinct “wrinkled” appearance, mirroring an elephant’s characteristic leathery skin.
This unusual texture owes its formation to basalt rock, a material birthed from the swift chilling of dense lava flows.
The second factor includes peculiarly located indentations which uncannily imitate an elephant’s eye and a sizable, floppy ear. Together, they contribute to a picture-perfect stone elephant masquerading in the open.
