Hannah Merton’s life has been a testament to the power of hope and the realization of dreams against all odds. A journey that began with the deepest desire to create a family of her own has now led her to become the loving mother of five beautiful babies, defying the norms and expectations of motherhood.
Hannah Merton, a 23-year-old resident of Akron, Ohio, has opened her heart and shared her miraculous story of embracing motherhood with quintuplets. Remarkably, her journey to becoming a mother of five had nothing to do with in-vitro fertilization (IVF), but rather, it was the result of unwavering determination, resilience, and a touch of medical intervention.
A Dream Deferred
Hannah and her husband, Jacob, a 24-year-old financial planner, embarked on their journey to parenthood three years ago. However, as time passed without the joyous news of pregnancy, they began to explore alternative paths to start their family.
Hannah, who had previously struggled with infertility, decided to seek medical assistance to enhance her chances of conceiving. She began using ovulation-stimulating medication, hoping to realize her dream of becoming a mother.
In October 2019, a pregnancy test delivered the long-awaited positive news. However, what followed was beyond anyone’s expectations – Hannah was carrying not one, two, or even three babies, but a total of five.
Hannah reflects on this surprising revelation: “I suffered from infertility, so I took medication to help me ovulate, and it worked better than we expected. We were told at the time I had a one percent chance of having triplets – nobody mentioned the chance of four, let alone five babies because it was so low. It was very shocking when I found out I had five babies.”

A Premature Arrival
At just 25 weeks into her pregnancy, Hannah was rushed to the hospital on March 5th, 2020. It was the day when her life would change forever. Philomena, Evangelie, Meredith, Gideon, and Elliot made their entrance into the world prematurely, with each tiny bundle weighing between 1lb 13oz and 1lb 4oz. These fragile lives could fit within the palm of Hannah’s hand.
Hannah recalls the overwhelming mix of emotions when she first laid eyes on her newborns: “When I first saw them all, I was shocked, but I was excited all at the same time. It was love at first sight, but I worried seeing them attached to so many different tubes and monitors and wires.”
Tragically, one of the quintuplets, Meredith, passed away just three days after birth, leaving a profound void in their hearts.
A Triumph Over Challenges
Over time, Philomena, Evangelie, and Elliot made their way home, but Gideon remained in the hospital. It wasn’t until March 25th, 2021, that the family was joyously reunited when Gideon was finally able to join his siblings at home.
Bringing four of her babies home marked an incredible milestone for Hannah and Jacob. However, the reality of caring for quadruplets was both exhilarating and overwhelming. Hannah describes the experience as “scary, chaotic, and loud.” The family’s daily life became a whirlwind of constant care, feeding, and cleaning.
Despite the undeniable challenges, Hannah wouldn’t have it any other way. She acknowledges the endless chaos but emphasizes the immeasurable joy and fulfillment that comes with being a mother to these four bundles of energy.
In the end, Hannah Merton’s story is a testament to the extraordinary strength of the human spirit, the boundless capacity for love, and the remarkable journey of motherhood, with all its twists and turns. It’s a story that inspires us to believe that dreams can come true, even when the odds seem insurmountable.
