Rushed to the emergency department struggling to breathe and clearly in pain, doctors soon uncovered the devastating truth: Pixie’s heart was functioning at only 3 percent. She was diagnosed with viral myocarditis alongside serious congenital complications.
Time became the enemy. Pixie was transferred by air ambulance to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, and later the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, at the Royal Children’s Hospital. There, her family entered a world of constant alarms, powerful medications, blood transfusions, and agonizing uncertainty. Each hour felt fragile. Doctors worked relentlessly to stabilize her tiny body, while her parents clung to hope during moments when the outcome felt impossibly uncertain.
Every small step forward became a miracle. Stabilizing her heart, reducing medications, and ultimately avoiding ECMO—a last-resort life support machine—were victories that felt almost unreal. Against overwhelming odds, Pixie continued to fight.
