In his adventures, there are very few things that Tom Hudson hasn’t experienced. This famous sailboat captain and travel addict dedicated his life to exploring continents and crossing oceans in every way imaginable.

However, when he decided to take a canoe trip down a river one day, he never imagined it would be a truly unique experience.

Canoeist Hears Faint Crying From Shore, Then Discovers Helpless Creature Stuck In Mud

Hudson was paddling along, enjoying the beauty around him, when he heard faint cries coming from the riverbank.

When he looked closer, he was in shock!

A Truly Shocking Sight

At first, Hudson couldn’t tell what was causing the cries. He paddled a bit closer to get a better look, and something caught his eye.

Suddenly, he was overwhelmed by surprise.

There it was: a white, furry creature lying deep in the mud next to a large log.

Without a second thought, Hudson approached the animal and realized it was a huge Great Pyrenees. The dog was stuck in the mud and couldn’t move at all.

“He doesn’t look well. I don’t see anyone around. There are no footprints. He’s covered in mud… he looks like he’s crying,” Hudson says in a YouTube video.

To help, Hudson removed the log pinning the dog’s body, then did everything he could to pull the helpless ball of fur from the mud.

Rescue and Reunion

After the tough rescue, Hudson loaded the dog into his canoe and paddled away. It was exhausting work, but Hudson was finally able to save the dog, and he couldn’t have been happier!

A few hundred feet away, Hudson spotted a dock and a nearby house. He decided to stop, hoping it might be the dog’s home.

“I hope this is your home,” he told the dog.

His instinct paid off—docking there and ringing the bell was the best decision he could have made.

Ivy’s Lucky Day!

When the man from the house heard Hudson’s story, he ran to the dock and immediately recognized his 14-year-old Great Pyrenees, Ivy. She had been missing for two whole days.

The family had been searching for her but couldn’t find her. Apparently, after getting stuck in the mud in such an isolated spot, Ivy had lost all her strength, leaving her no choice but to wait for rescue.

Seeing Ivy reunited with her owner was truly heartwarming. Hudson even stayed to help the family clean Ivy’s muddy fur and give her a bath.

Grateful for Hudson’s kindness, the family invited him to spend the night before continuing his canoe adventure the next morning.

After forming this unexpected friendship, Hudson couldn’t be more thankful for finding Ivy and safely returning her to her family.

“They were so happy to have their dog back. She’s a 14-year-old Pyrenees. She’s been in the family for a long time. In the state she was in, I don’t think she would’ve lasted another day, so I’m just really glad I found her,” Tom says in the video.

Now past her traumatic ordeal, Ivy will continue to enjoy her golden years surrounded by her family—and hopefully staying out of trouble!
