Could Rookie RB Phil Mafah Be the Cowboys’ Surprise Hero in 2025?
The Dallas Cowboys may have quietly stumbled upon a hidden weapon in their seventh-round draft pick—Phil Mafah. While all the buzz in training camp revolves around explosive rookie Jaden Blue and the crowded running back room, Mafah has been largely overlooked. But that might be about to change.

At 6 feet and 234 pounds, Mafah brings the size, grit, and north-south running style that this Cowboys backfield desperately needs. The Clemson product racked up over 5 yards per carry on a solid workload in college and showed remarkable consistency despite battling through a shoulder injury last season.
Let’s be real—Jaden Blue may be lightning-fast, but he’s not built to handle a heavy load. Enter Mafah, who could be the “thunder” in this classic “thunder and lightning” duo. With questions surrounding veterans like Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders—both of whom are coming off disappointing seasons—Mafah’s power, durability, and goal-line potential could earn him a key role early in the season.

The Cowboys’ running back situation is wide open. Between the uncertainty around Williams’ recovery, Sanders’ declining production, and the limited size of Deuce Vaughn, Mafah offers something no one else in the room does—brute force and bell-cow potential.
Of course, he’s not without flaws. Mafah lacks elite speed and hasn’t proven much as a pass-catcher. He’s not going to break away for 60-yard touchdowns or dazzle in the screen game. But for short-yardage power and red-zone situations, he may be just what the Cowboys need.
Don’t be surprised if Mafah becomes a preseason standout. The coaching staff will likely give him plenty of reps to prove himself—and if he delivers, he could make the 53-man roster or at least secure a spot on the practice squad. And with how volatile running back health can be in the NFL, he might not be waiting long for his opportunity.
In a backfield full of questions and inconsistency, Phil Mafah may just become the Cowboys’ unexpected answer. He’s not flashy—but he might be exactly what Dallas needs.
