Florence had to be rushed for emergency veterinary treatment after she was discovered in undergrowth by a couple walking their dog
A dog dumped in an east Hull park after “serving her purpose” and having puppies has finally found a home full of love and happiness.
Florence – thought to be around five years old – was discovered tied to a tree by a rope tied tightly around her neck in September last year. A couple walking their dog in the area made the sad discovery when they heard her cries and whimpering at the children’s play park in Abbey Street.
The good Samaritans swiftly took her back to their home and contacted the RSPCA, who rushed Florence for emergency veterinary treatment. She was then taken into the care of Hull and East Riding branch of the charity.
Staff at the Clough Road premises nursed Florence back to health and cared for her until she was well enough to be adopted. Soon enough, the lucky dog was snapped up by a couple in Cleethorpes who were “smitten” with her as soon as they met her.
Mike Savage, 74, and his wife Sandra, 72, had first seen Florence’s story on the news and were appalled. She has now settled in well to her new home and enjoys “lots of cuddles” and goes out for walks by the sea regularly.
Inspector Laura Barber from the Hull and East Riding RSPCA branch said: “It was so good to see Flo as she is such a lovely dog. When we first took her into our care she was obviously very nervous but she had such a sweet nature. I am delighted to see how she is happily settled now with Mike and Sandra who adore her.
“When Florence was found she had enlarged teats showing she had recently had puppies and I suspect she may have been dumped as she had served her purpose. She also had a severe infection in both ears which needed urgent treatment.
“Thanks to the Hull and East Riding Branch of the RSPCA she was returned to full health and has now been able to put her sad past behind her.
To tie a pet to a tree and to leave her like that is just so callous but sadly, due to the cost of living crisis, we are seeing more and more of these kinds of abandonments. That’s why we are running our Cancel Out Cruelty fundraising campaign to help our frontline teams save more animals like Flo.”
Florence’s proud new owner, Mike, said: “I remember seeing her story in the news and we were on the lookout for a rescue dog as sadly our previous pet had passed away months earlier. I was horrified by the story and decided to keep an eye on the situation.
