For many years, the image of elephants carrying tourists through forests, temples, or performing in circuses has been an iconic part of Thailand’s tourism industry. But behind their gentle, majestic appearance lies a silent tragedy that has spanned decades.
Recently, wildlife protection organizations in Thailand released a shocking series of images revealing the deteriorating health conditions of elderly elephants living in tourist camps. Among them is Mae Boon Sri, a 55-year-old female elephant whose back is severely sunken and deformed after carrying thousands of tourists each year for over 25 consecutive years.
According to experts, an elephant’s spine is not anatomically built to support heavy weight on its back for extended periods. The daily attachment of saddles and continuous rides severely damage the spinal structure, leading to long-term consequences such as arthritis, soft tissue injuries, and reduced mobility. Some elephants even go blind, lose their hearing, or suffer from depression due to years of confinement and harsh conditions.

Many tourists who came across these images expressed shock and heartbreak. A German tourist who once rode an elephant in Chiang Mai admitted: “I had no idea that behind that ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ experience was years of torture for such an intelligent and sensitive creature. I truly feel guilty.”
In response to the growing public backlash, the Thai government and many travel operators have begun transitioning toward more sustainable models such as “elephant-friendly sanctuaries,” where visitors are only allowed to observe, feed, and bathe elephants in natural surroundings — without rides or performances.
Still, hundreds of elephants once exploited for profit continue to live with the devastating consequences of their past. Although Mae Boon Sri has now been “retired,” the deep scars she bears are permanent and irreversible.
The story of these aging elephants serves not only as a wake-up call for the tourism industry but also as a powerful reminder to us all: human entertainment should never come at the cost of another creature’s suffering.
