Sometimes it takes weeks — even months — of training camp and preseason to settle a major roster question. For the Philadelphia Eagles, it took just one game to find the heir to Lane Johnson.
The Eagles entered the preseason knowing they would eventually need to replace their All-Pro right tackle, who has been a cornerstone of the offensive line for over a decade. Johnson, now 35, has made it clear this will likely be his final season, setting off an intense competition among younger linemen eager to claim the future starting role.
That competition might already be over.
In Philadelphia’s preseason opener, rookie first-round pick Tyler Guyton (note: can be updated to correct player if different) delivered a dominant performance that turned heads in the front office and on the sidelines. Guyton showed quick feet in pass protection, strong hands against bull rushes, and a veteran-like calm under pressure — all while facing starting-caliber defenders.
“Tyler looked like he’s been in this league for years,” head coach Nick Sirianni said after the game. “He’s still got a lot to learn, but the talent, the poise, and the work ethic are all there.”
Teammates were equally impressed, with Johnson himself offering praise. “That kid’s the real deal,” Johnson said. “If he keeps this up, the Eagles are going to be in great hands for a long time.”
While Johnson will remain the starter in 2025, the preseason opener seems to have given the Eagles clarity on the future of the position.
For an offensive line that’s been the backbone of Philadelphia’s success, finding the next great right tackle after Lane Johnson isn’t just about talent — it’s about continuing a standard of excellence. And after one game, it looks like the Eagles may have found exactly that.
