A rare yet deeply moving incident took place this morning on a major highway connecting the city center to the outskirts. A baby elephant, believed to have been raised in a nearby tourist facility, suddenly panicked and slipped, collapsing in the middle of heavy traffic.
According to eyewitnesses, the young elephant appeared extremely terrified, repeatedly letting out frantic cries and struggling to get back on its feet but unable to stand due to the slippery road surface and a badly scraped leg. Vehicles traveling at high speeds were forced to brake abruptly, creating chaos and a traffic jam that lasted more than 30 minutes.
One truck driver shared:
“I saw it fall right in front of my truck. People were screaming, and cars stopped in a long line. At that moment, I was afraid there would be a terrible accident…”
The most touching part was that immediately after the baby elephant fell, the entire herd turned back and surrounded it, gently touching its body with their trunks to reassure it. One adult elephant tried to lift the baby’s head, while others carefully nudged it with their trunks and feet to encourage it to stand up. This display of solidarity moved many onlookers to tears.
After receiving an emergency call, animal rescue teams and traffic police quickly arrived at the scene, setting up safety barriers and securing the area. Throughout the rescue operation, the teams worked with extreme caution to avoid frightening the entire herd. Large protective sheets were set up, along with specialized ropes and a light-duty crane brought in to help lift the baby elephant.
After nearly an hour of patient efforts—combined with the herd’s natural support—the young elephant finally managed to stand, to the cheers and applause of the hundreds of people watching. The herd then formed a circle around the baby and gently guided it off the road to an open area nearby, where veterinarians performed an urgent examination.
According to initial reports, the elephant was exhausted, dehydrated, and had minor leg injuries but was fortunately not in life-threatening condition. Rescuers quickly administered fluids and treated its wounds on site before transporting it to a local wildlife conservation center for further monitoring.
