Kanchanaburi, Thailand – A heartbreaking tragedy has shaken the global conservation community after six wild elephants died in a desperate attempt to rescue a herd member that had slipped and fallen into the raging waters of Haew Narok Waterfall—ominously nicknamed the “Cliff of Death”—inside Khao Yai National Park.
According to park rangers, the incident was discovered early in the morning when patrol teams heard frantic trumpeting from the direction of the falls. Upon arriving at the scene, they found the bodies of six elephants—both adults and juveniles—scattered at the base of the waterfall. Tracks and evidence at the site suggest that a calf fell first, followed by multiple herd members trying to save it, only to be swept away by the powerful current.
One park ranger, speaking with a heavy voice, said:
“Elephants are deeply social animals with strong family bonds. When one is in trouble, the entire herd will try to help. But this waterfall is extremely dangerous—there have been multiple drownings here in the past.”
Haew Narok Waterfall is notorious for its steep drop and fierce water flow. Despite warning signs and natural barriers, the rainy season raises water levels and makes the terrain slick and treacherous, significantly increasing the risk of accidents.
Conservation experts emphasize that this tragedy serves as a serious warning about the dangers that natural landscapes with hazardous terrain pose to wildlife. Khao Yai National Park authorities are now considering expanding natural barriers and creating safer movement corridors for elephants and other wildlife species.
