Wildlife Rescuers Shares the Adorable Way Mama Elephants Keep Their Babies in Line

Odisha, India – What was once a peaceful forest in Keonjhar district was shattered by tragedy when a suspected Improvised Explosive Device (IED) killed a young elephant calf and left its mother severely injured.

According to witnesses and forest officials, the explosion rang out in the early morning hours. When the rescue team reached the site, they were met with a heart-wrenching scene: the lifeless body of the calf, blood pooling on the forest floor, while the mother stood nearby with tear-filled eyes, gently nudging her baby with a trembling trunk, refusing to accept the truth.

💔 A Pain Too Deep for Words

Despite her own serious injuries to her legs and face, the mother elephant refused to leave her calf’s side. She stood vigil for hours, without eating or moving — silently shielding her baby’s body with her own, as if still trying to protect it one last time.

A forest officer present at the scene shared:

“We’ve seen many tragedies in our line of work, but this… this broke us. She wouldn’t leave her baby. No one could hold back their tears.”

🧨 A Hidden Weapon of Cruelty

IEDs — deadly devices often planted by poachers — are disguised in food or buried along forest paths frequented by elephants. They’re designed to cause devastating injuries, making it easier to capture or kill wildlife.

Experts warn:

“This is no longer just about conservation — it’s a war between nature and human greed.”

🚨 Authorities Respond

The Odisha state government has ordered an urgent investigation and pledged to intensify patrols and remove hidden traps in areas inhabited by elephants. Officials are also calling on local communities to cooperate in protecting wildlife before more lives are lost.

🕯️ A Tragic Ending No One Wanted

The baby elephant — a symbol of new life and hope — didn’t survive. The mother, wounded and emotionally shattered, is now being treated at a wildlife rescue center.
Their story serves as a painful reminder: when nature no longer has a safe space, humanity is losing its own soul.
