Cute dogs hold a universal appeal, often swiftly finding homes when housed in shelters. Nevertheless, the story of Martin, an irresistibly endearing dog residing at the SPCA of Wake County, has taken a less fortunate trajectory.
Martin, a senior dog, was relinquished by his 89-year-old owner who, recognizing his inability to adequately care for Martin, made the difficult decision. Samantha Ranlet, a marketing communications specialist at the SPCA, shared with The Dodo, “His elderly owner, at 89 years old, reached a juncture where he believed Martin deserved a life he couldn’t provide.”
Ranlet continued, “He yearned for a superior life for Martin.”
While the motive behind Martin’s surrender was genuinely poignant, it underscored the imperative for him to find a nurturing home for his twilight years. Despite his age, Martin adapted commendably to his new surroundings. Ranlet observed, “His transition was relatively smooth. Whether he comprehended the circumstances or not, right from day one, he emanated a joyful, affable demeanor akin to a cherished elderly gentleman with a countenance reminiscent of a teddy bear.”
Nevertheless, Martin’s quest for a forever home encountered hurdles. He experienced multiple adoptions, only to be returned to the shelter on each occasion. Over the course of two months, he was brought back an astounding seven times. The intricacies of caring for an older dog, compounded by Martin’s heartworm condition, potentially contributed to these challenges. Yet, the shelter staff maintained their optimism regarding the discovery of the perfect match for Martin. They retained their belief that a family ideally suited for him existed out there.
In an endeavor to facilitate Martin’s quest for a lasting home, the shelter shared his narrative on their Facebook platform. Their post highlighted, “Martin embodies the epitome of canine companionship. His former owner affirmed his exceptional gentleness, particularly with children – he used to snuggle up with their grandkids, providing them a resting place for a nap. He displays affable interactions with individuals of all ages, from seniors to youngsters, coexists harmoniously with canines of varied sizes and energy levels, and possesses house manners and crate familiarity. Although Martin’s hearing isn’t perfect due to his ten years of age, he remains skilled in certain tricks and derives immense pleasure from rewards in the form of treats.” The potency of social media radiantly illuminated Martin’s story. The post quickly gained momentum, garnering nearly 3,000 shares. In less than 48 hours, the shelter became inundated with adoption inquiries.
Among the aspirants was a couple well-versed in attending to senior dogs. Martin’s age and medical status posed no deterrent for them. Ranlet disclosed, “They simply fell head over heels for him and his teddy bear-like vitality.”
The post’s resonance even transformed Martin into a local luminary. The SPCA of Wake County recounted an amusing anecdote: “…shortly after Martin’s new family exited the SPCA premises and took him along to the pet emporium, the employees at the store instantaneously recognized him, exclaiming, ‘Is that Martin?!’”
