In one of the most surprising turns of the 2025 NFL Draft, quarterback Shedeur Sanders reportedly blocked the Baltimore Ravens from selecting him, effectively turning down a chance to join MVP Lamar Jackson’s team.
According to multiple reports, the Ravens were planning to use their fifth-round pick (No. 141 overall) to select Sanders. But before they could pull the trigger, Sanders — or those representing him — made it known that he had no interest in joining the team as a backup. Why? Because Lamar Jackson, a former league MVP and franchise cornerstone, isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Instead of joining a stable, playoff-caliber franchise, Sanders chose to gamble on opportunity over pedigree, leading many insiders to question the long-term implications of his decision.
Baltimore, blindsided by the rejection, pivoted and selected offensive lineman Carson Vinson instead. Just three picks later, the Cleveland Browns traded up and grabbed Sanders at No. 144 overall — a team with far less clarity at the quarterback position, giving Sanders a clearer (but far from guaranteed) path to playing time.

The move has ignited fierce debate across the NFL landscape.
“It’s incredibly short-sighted,” said former NFL quarterback and analyst Alex Smith on NFL Countdown. “You don’t turn down the Ravens. That’s a top-tier organization. Learn behind Lamar, develop, and earn your shot.”
Fans are also divided. Some see Sanders as confident and calculated, choosing the path that best suits his ambitions. Others call it egotistical and risky, pointing out that even in Cleveland, Sanders starts as QB3 behind Joe Flacco and rookie Dillon Gabriel.
When asked about the rumors, Sanders offered a vague response:
“I’m focused on where I’m at. I don’t dwell on the past. Everything happens for a reason.”
Only time will tell if this bold decision will elevate Sanders to stardom — or become the defining mistake of his career.
One thing is certain: you don’t say “no” to the Ravens every day.
