Los Angeles — In an emotional and heartbreaking moment, Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis has opened up about the loss of a young girl named Sonya, a family friend and loyal Lakers fan, who tragically lost her life during a recent shooting incident.
Speaking to reporters after practice, Davis’s voice trembled as he recalled the final message Sonya sent him just hours before the tragedy. “She texted me saying she wasn’t feeling safe and wanted to talk. I told myself I’d reply after practice… but I never got the chance,” Davis said, visibly holding back tears.
Sources close to the player revealed that Davis had met Sonya through a Lakers charity event last year. The two stayed in touch, and she often looked to him for motivation as she faced bullying and difficult circumstances at home.
“I’ve met thousands of fans,” Davis continued, “but Sonya was different. She had this light, this hope that made you believe in people again. I just wish I could’ve done more.”
The NBA community has rallied behind Davis, flooding social media with the hashtag #JusticeForSonya, demanding answers about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
For Anthony Davis, however, it’s personal. “Basketball can wait,” he said quietly. “Right now, I just want to make sure her story isn’t forgotten.”
