Tour Guide Len Taylor Spent 6 Grueling Hours Wading Through Mud to Rescue a Trapped Baby Elephant

Early yesterday morning, in the Okavango Wildlife Reserve in Botswana, veteran tour guide Len Taylor spent an exhausting six hours wading through thick, treacherous mud, risking his life to rescue a baby elephant trapped and on the verge of death.
The elephant calf, around two years old, had reportedly wandered away from its herd while crossing a flooded area and had fallen into a deep mud pit. When discovered, the animal was half-submerged, trembling, with only its trunk reaching out in a desperate attempt to breathe.
Len Taylor — who was leading a group of tourists on a safari at the time — quickly assessed the situation, called for backup, and entered the mud alone, armed with ropes, a small shovel, and an emergency kit. With the mud reaching up to his chest, every step was a battle against the elements. Len remained calm, speaking gently to the elephant while tirelessly digging trenches around its body to relieve pressure and allow it to breathe more easily.
“Every time I made progress, the mud collapsed back in. But when I looked into its eyes, I knew I couldn’t give up,” Len later said with tears in his eyes.
After nearly six grueling hours under scorching heat, his body exhausted and hands raw and bleeding from digging, Len — with the help of rescue staff and a light utility vehicle — finally freed the elephant calf. The elephant was immediately treated by veterinarians, rehydrated, and cared for. Thankfully, no serious injuries were found, and the calf is expected to be released back into the wild after several days of monitoring.
