Thailand – A Heartbreaking Incident Sparks Outrage After Construction Site Injures Wild Elephants
Thailand – A heartbreaking incident has sparked nationwide and international outrage: a highway construction site in Prachinburi Province has encroached on a wild elephant sanctuary, resulting in a mother elephant suffering severe injuries and heavy bleeding after stepping on construction debris.
The incident occurred early yesterday morning when a local forest patrol team discovered an adult female elephant struggling to walk away from the site. Despite her massive size, she was limping heavily, with blood pouring from her front leg. Trailing behind was a baby elephant, less than two years old, visibly shaken, with back abrasions and clear signs of panic.
Veterinarians confirmed that the mother elephant’s wounds were caused by stepping on sharp nails and metal rods left scattered around the site. Alarmingly, the area is a natural habitat for a rare group of endangered Asian elephants – yet it was not properly marked during the construction planning process.
“This is not just an accident – it’s the result of irresponsibility and a blatant disregard for the lives of species that should be under strict protection,” said Mr. Sarawut Thanarak, director of the Thailand Wildlife Rescue Center, in a press conference.

Veterinary teams and animal rescue organizations arrived in time to treat the injuries and have since transported both elephants to the nearest rescue center for ongoing care. However, initial assessments suggest a long recovery period of several months, with a high risk of infection.
Heart-wrenching images of the mother elephant lying motionless in the mud and concrete, while her calf touches her with its trunk in a desperate attempt to wake her, have gone viral on social media. Thousands have shared the story using hashtags like #SaveTheElephants and #StopConstructionNow, urging the Thai government and developers to halt all activity and reassess the environmental impact.
“This is their home – not empty land for humans to use as they please,” one outraged Twitter user commented.
Environmental activists warn that if no serious intervention is taken, similar tragedies will continue to occur, pushing the already dwindling wild elephant population closer to extinction.
Local authorities in Prachinburi have announced a full investigation and are considering suspending the project in the coming days.
“No project is worth the blood and life of innocent creatures,” concluded Mr. Chatchai Niramai, spokesperson for GreenEarth Thailand.
